Birmingham consults on Our Future City Plan Central Birmingham 2040- ‘Shaping Our City Together’

Birmingham City Council officially launched a public consultation in respect of Our Future City Plan (OFCP) Central Birmingham 2040 ‘Shaping Our Future Together on the 26th of January 2021 until Friday 26th of March 2021.

The Plan relates to the future development of central Birmingham over the next 20 years.

As a first step towards replacing the Big City Plan Masterplan (2011), the Council has outlined a vision for major change in the central part of Birmingham. The OFCP will incorporate the entire central Birmingham area from the City core to inner city suburbs, involving 5 areas: Central Heart, Central North, Central East, Central South and Central West.

The Plan outlines the context of the area, key challenges and opportunities. This is followed by a proposed Vision and a set of Guiding Principles which lead to 6 Strategic Themes. The 6 ‘City Moves’ have been developed to group together the potential actions that will ultimately deliver the Vision of the OFCP 2040.

The OFCP sets out a series of ambitious goals and actions that could be taken to achieve them. It recognises that for Central Birmingham to remain attractive and become more vibrant, there is potential to promote a greater mix of uses across the area led by introducing more residential activity at greater density as part of well-designed places.

Whilst a template for change has been outlined in the OFCP, it is not a final blueprint. The publication of the OFCP document is regarded as the beginning of a continuous process of engagement to ensure that all communities across Birmingham have an opportunity to shape and deliver a shared future.

It is anticipated that the feedback received will support the production of the OFCP Draft Central Birmingham Framework to be launched in summer 2021.
